Tracks

1. Mrs. Harvey's (3:19)
Mrs. Harvey's Bakery is an historic
building on 11th Avenue in Longmont.
I wrote this in 2010 after driving by
it a dozen or more times during a move.

2. Nines (3:28)
Graphite Addiction recorded a swinging
version of this as "Mental Morphology. On
this funkier take, I'm trying and failing to
play bass like Tim and drums like Pete.

3. Cibeles (3:21)
A quick one in Phrygian Dominant. Named
for the Plaza de Cibeles in Madrid.

4. Blues for Phrygia (3:54)
I was in a Phrygian kind of mood, so here's
a sort of 16 bar blues in Phrygian.
Because  if you're going to write a blues
it might as well also be a jazz waltz.

5. Dearest (2:37)
I found this melody sketched beside the
word "Dearest" on an old lesson payment
reminder card. I don't know if I intended
it as a declaration of love or as a request
to settle a delinquent account. I like to
think the finished tune works for either
case.

6. Fossil Creek Tunnel (4:06)
When I moved to the south side of
fort Collins in 2012, I was excited to
learn that the tunnel on the Fossil Creek
Path would soon be finished, allowing me
to ride a loop around town. It was finally
opened right before I moved in 2019
so I wrote this the one day I used it.

7. For C and D (3:27)
An attempt to make triad pairs sound
natural. The entire melody is alternating
C major and D major triads doing their
best impression of a jazz standard.

8. Near Majority (3:17)
I wrote the first 8 bars for an assignment
in college back in 1999. It's as difficult
to sightread as possible, to trip up my
professor as he played it in front of
the class. As a bit of penance for this
prank,  21 years later I've finished and
recorded it.

9. Somewhere West of Wichita (4:09)
This companion piece to "Somewhere
East of Omaha" from "Music to Squeak
By" shares its odd little 5 note
rhythmic quirk. Mainly it's included
to feature my lovely Collings baritone.

10. Actually, Actually (3:09)
I have the bad habit of prefacing every
differing opinion with "actually". The
former manager of Fort Collins
Coffeehouse, Hayley, called me out
on this one day as I was writing
the chords to this tune so this title
seems apt.
